Managed Programmatic Advertising for Mobile Apps

ROCKAPP is a growth partner for mobile apps ready to scale. We plan and run managed programmatic advertising through third-party DSPs and platform ecosystems, connecting your growth targets to buying rules, measurement, and the decisions that follow.

Third-Party DSPs, Run for You

Campaigns run inside established DSP ecosystems and are operated end to end by our team.

Built Around Your Outcome

Bids, budgets, and optimization events follow the app outcome you need, from first purchase to re-engagement.

Supply Under Review

Placements and supply paths are checked throughout the campaign, and app/site lists are updated as evidence comes in.

Decisions on Record

Budget moves and setting changes come with a stated reason, so you never have to guess why something changed.

What Our Programmatic Advertising Services Include

Our programmatic advertising services cover the operating work between your growth plan and the platforms that buy the media. Teams usually hire a programmatic advertising agency because running DSPs well takes traders, analysts, and creative resources few app companies want to build in-house. Your team keeps the business goals and final approvals. ROCKAPP runs the rest.

What Is Managed Programmatic Advertising?

Programmatic advertising is automated media buying. An ad impression is offered for sale, and buyers bid on it in an auction that lasts milliseconds. The process is called real-time bidding (RTB), and most of the industry runs it on the IAB Tech Lab's OpenRTB protocol. Managed programmatic adds the specialists and routines that decide how to use that auction. Four parties sit between an open ad slot in an app and the ad that fills it:

Publisher

The app or mobile site that owns the ad slot and lists its authorized sellers in an app-ads.txt file.

SSP & Ad Exchange

Sell-side technology that packages the impression and runs the auction. Its sellers.json file lists the companies selling inventory through it.

DSP

Buy-side software that scores each impression against your targeting and bid rules before the auction closes.

Managed Layer

ROCKAPP's part: choosing platforms, setting the rules the DSP bids by, reading results, and changing course.
Direct DSP use vs. managed programmatic with ROCKAPP:

Buying rules
Set by your team inside each platform's interface
Set by traders from your outcome and guardrails
Platform choice
Whatever is already integrated

Optimization event
Often the install, because it is easiest to track
The deepest event your measurement reports reliably
Placement review
Done when someone has time
Scheduled checks with app/site lists kept current
Reporting
Each DSP dashboard, read separately
Platform, MMP, and backend data reconciled in one view

Programmatic Scope and Inventory

Mobile programmatic advertising can reach in-app inventory, mobile web, display, native, video, and playable or interactive placements. What is available to you depends on the platform, the geo, the app's category, and the ad policies each platform enforces. Our current mix includes Kayzen, Moloco, Liftoff, Persona.ly, Bidease, Jampp, Smadex, Xapads, and RevX, and the platforms for each engagement are chosen case by case.

Each supply source in the media plan is documented on seven points:
1

Role

acquisition, re-engagement, or reach
2

Visibility

how much detail the platform shares about placements and the path each impression took
3

Format

which creative sizes and types the inventory accepts
4

Controls

the targeting options, frequency limits, and exclusions the platform supports
5

Optimization event

the in-app event the platform bids toward
6

Reporting

which data arrives, at what granularity, and with what delay
7

Quality measures

the invalid-traffic and brand-safety checks in place

When the main goal is bringing lapsed users back, programmatic re-engagement runs within our mobile app retargeting service. Upper-funnel reach on programmatic and CTV inventory is planned as part of our brand awareness campaigns.

Who We Run Programmatic For

Programmatic pays off for apps that already buy traffic, know which in-app event matters, and need reach beyond the channels they use today. For most of them, it runs as one channel inside a broader app acquisition program.

iGaming & Betting

Depositor-focused campaigns where platform policies permit the category. Regulated markets only.

E-commerce & Retail

Shopping apps whose campaigns bid toward the first purchase and the repeat order that follows it.

Carsharing & Mobility

City-bound apps that need dense local reach and a verified first ride.

Dating (Mainstream)

Apps that judge new users by registration, profile completion, and early engagement.

Streaming & Subscription

Content and subscription apps where a trial only counts once it turns into a paid plan.

Fintech & Banking

Banking and lending apps where a new user counts once the account is funded. Regulated markets only.

Does This Sound Familiar?

Two Channels, No Headroom

Social and one ad network carry the whole budget, and both are close to saturation.

DSPs That Never Got Traction

A test went live, spent its budget, and was switched off before anyone learned why.

Installs Without Activation

Campaigns chase the cheapest event, and cohorts never reach a purchase or deposit.

Measurement Gaps

View-through attribution (VTA), iOS privacy settings, and postbacks aren't in place, so bidding algorithms learn from partial data.

Creative Built for Social Only

Feed assets get squeezed into banners and interstitials, and CTR suffers.

Supply You Can't See

Reports show spend and installs but not the apps or placements behind them.

Forget About That With ROCKAPP

Programmatic adds reach only when the operating work around it is done properly. Here is how each of those problems gets handled.

New Supply, Added in Steps

Programmatic opens inventory beyond your saturated channels, and budget grows only after the previous step proved itself.

Tests That Answer a Question

Every DSP test ends with a written verdict on the platform, so no budget gets spent without a lesson.

Bidding on the Event That Matters

Optimization shifts to the most valuable event you can track with confidence, from activation to deposit.

Measurement Ready Before Launch

Our specialists set up VTA, iOS privacy configuration, and postback delivery with your team before spend starts.

Creative Sized for the Placement

The in-house creative team produces static, video, and playable assets built for programmatic slots.

Placements in the Open

You see which apps and placements your budget reached, as far as each platform's reporting allows.

How Managed DSP Buying Works

Most of the work happens before and after the auction. The DSP places each bid automatically; managed DSP buying sets what that bid can target, how much it can cost, and what counts as success. Five decisions shape every campaign.
1

Translate the Growth Objective Into Buying Rules

Markets, the business outcome, budget, schedule, formats, frequency caps, and economic guardrails such as a target CPA or payback window are agreed first. They become campaign rules, and they also define the point at which a campaign should stop.
2

Select Platforms and Supply Paths

Platforms are compared on eligible inventory in your markets, transparency, support for your optimization event, fees, creative requirements, and operational fit. A larger pool of supply isn't automatically a better one. A visible supply path tells you who sold the impression; it doesn't prove the traffic was clean.
3

Configure Bidding and Placement Controls

Geography, device and OS, schedule, bid and optimization settings, exclusions, and app/site allowlists or blocklists are set inside each platform. Every change goes into a configuration record, which lets you trace any result back to the setting that produced it.
4

Launch a Controlled Learning Plan

The first campaign answers one question. A typical example: can this platform deliver activated users in the US below your CPA guardrail? It runs on a bounded budget for a fixed observation window. Scale comes later and has to be earned.
5

Diagnose Before Reallocating

When results disappoint, the funnel is read in order: delivery, engagement, install, activation, then cohort quality. Budget that won't spend points to setup or bid limits. Weak engagement points to creative or placement fit. Installs that never activate usually mean the wrong event or the wrong supply. Strong install volume on its own proves very little.

Optimization and Measurement

Platform reports, the MMP, Apple’s privacy-preserving frameworks (SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit), product analytics, and your backend each answer a different question. Their numbers rarely match, because each one counts with its own rules and attribution windows. The signal ladder shows what every level can and cannot tell you.
Signal level What it can diagnose What it can't prove alone
Delivery: impressions, spend, win rate Whether the campaign can buy the supply it targets That anyone noticed the ad
Interaction: clicks, views, CTR Creative and placement fit Intent to install or buy
Install or re-engagement Funnel volume and cost per user That the user becomes a customer
Qualified in-app event Early user quality by source Long-term value
Backend value: revenue, deposits, LTV Whether a cohort pays back That the campaign caused the result

Before launch, both teams settle which report wins when two of them disagree. Cohorts are judged only after they mature past the agreed window. Attribution assigns credit, but it cannot establish causality; incrementality needs a holdout or a comparable test design. Measurement runs through AppsFlyer, Adjust, or another MMP you already use.

Fraud, Brand Safety, and Transparency

Invalid traffic and unsafe placements are risks every programmatic buyer carries. The framework below combines platform controls, supply-level review, and ROCKAPP's in-house checks.
Platform Controls
Built-in invalid-traffic filtering, category exclusions, and placement blocklists inside each DSP.
Supply Review
Placement and supply-path checks that use sellers.json and the SupplyChain object to see who sold each impression.
In-House Anti-Fraud Checks
Our own anti-fraud system scores incoming traffic and flags click spikes, install bursts, and cohorts with no in-app activity for the team to review.
Escalation
Suspect sources are excluded, and quality disputes are raised with the platform for you.

No set of controls brings these risks to zero. The aim is to spot problems early and act before they reach your reports. Our research on fraudulent traffic in iGaming breaks down where invalid impressions and installs concentrate across programmatic, affiliate, and other channels.

Creative Formats for Programmatic

Programmatic creative has to fit the slot it lands in: a banner, an interstitial, a native card, a rewarded video, or a playable. A concept that wins in a social feed often needs a different cut for these placements.

Specifications

Sizes, durations, file weights, and end-card rules for every platform and format.

Hypothesis

Each variant tests one idea: a message, an offer, a visual hook, or a call to action.

Message Continuity

The ad, the store page, and the first app screen tell one consistent story.

Versioning & Approval

Variants are named, versioned, and approved before launch, with results logged against each one.

Static, video, playable, and UGC-style formats can be made by our programmatic creative production team. Whether creative work is part of a programmatic engagement or scoped separately is agreed up front.

Managed Programmatic Process and Deliverables

Six phases take a programmatic media buying engagement from first conversation to a repeatable test cycle. Each phase has set inputs and a concrete output.
1

Phase 1: Fit and Measurement Assessment

Inputs: app-store links, target markets, the event map, and your attribution setup. Output: a fit decision, a list of missing prerequisites, and the role programmatic should play. Sometimes the honest answer is that it shouldn't play one yet.
2

Phase 2: Media and Supply Plan

The agreed outcome and guardrails become platform and supply roles, a budget structure, a format matrix, test questions, and a measurement plan.
3

Phase 3: Setup and QA

Campaign configuration, event and link checks, the creative matrix, approvals, and a launch checklist signed off before activation.
4

Phase 4: Controlled Launch

Spend pace, event receipt, placement visibility, and anomalies are monitored from day one. Early delivery data is a technical check; business outcomes are judged once cohorts mature.
5

Phase 5: Optimization and Learning Reviews

Every adjustment goes on record with the action, rationale, expected result, and review date. Ideas that can't be tested yet go into a backlog.
6

Phase 6: Reporting and Next-Test Planning

Reports state what happened, why, what remains uncertain, and the next decision, which becomes the question for the following test.

Programmatic Responsibility Map

Four parties take part in every campaign. The map shows who owns each area, which keeps important tasks from falling between teams.

Is Managed Programmatic Right for Your App?

A quick self-check before you reach out. If several items on the right describe your situation, fix those first or start with a different service.
Good fit Not a fit yet
Measurement MMP connected, VTA enabled, iOS privacy and probabilistic setup in place No tracker, or events that never reach the MMP
Outcome A clearly defined in-app outcome to optimize toward Success defined only as install volume
Creative Capacity to supply or approve placement-ready assets A single social video and no way to adapt it
Learning period Budget and patience for a controlled test window Full scale expected in week one
Eligibility App category and markets permitted by the platforms Unresolved licensing or policy restrictions
Operating model A managed partner alongside an in-house UA team A self-serve DSP seat run by your own traders
Expectations Guardrails plus evidence-based stop/scale rules Guaranteed cost or return targets

If programmatic is one piece of a wider growth plan, start with mobile user acquisition. If winning back existing users comes first, look at our re-engagement campaigns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in managed programmatic advertising?

Usually media and supply planning, platform setup, campaign operation, targeting and placement controls, creative requirements, measurement, optimization, and reporting. Your agreement lists the exact platforms, inventory, deliverables, and responsibilities.

How does a managed programmatic service differ from using a DSP directly?

A DSP gives you buying technology and access to the supply it supports. A managed service adds the people and operating routines that turn business goals into platform choice, campaign setup, and day-to-day decisions backed by measurement. Companies that already run trading, analytics, and creative in-house may prefer a direct seat.

Which inventory and formats can be used?

Availability depends on the approved platform, the target market, your app category, and campaign setup. The proposed media plan names the inventory, formats, and controls available for your engagement before anything goes live.

How is performance measured?

Platform delivery data is combined with your MMP, privacy-preserving attribution where it applies, product analytics, and results from your backend. ROCKAPP and your team agree in advance which source answers each question and how discrepancies will be handled.

How does ROCKAPP address fraud and brand safety?

Through available platform controls, inventory review, app/site lists, in-house traffic screening, and escalation within the agreed scope. These measures reduce risk; no buyer can eliminate it.

Which apps are a good fit for managed programmatic advertising?

Apps that can define a meaningful acquisition, activation, or re-engagement outcome, measure it reliably, supply placement-appropriate creative, and allow a controlled learning period. Programmatic won't make up for unresolved eligibility, broken tracking, or a weak conversion path.

Can ROCKAPP guarantee CPI, CPA, or ROAS?

No result should be guaranteed in advance. A responsible engagement defines commercial guardrails, test budgets, maturity windows, and stop/scale rules, then acts on observed evidence.
